Scout's AI resume tailor is now a one-click install: the extension is live on the official Chrome Web Store, so getting it into your browser takes about 30 seconds and updates arrive automatically. Once it's in, you can open any job posting — LinkedIn, Naukri, iimjobs, or a company careers page — click the Scout icon, and get a resume rewritten for that exact role, plus a cover letter, in around 30 seconds.

This guide walks through the full setup: installing from the Web Store, what happens the first time you open the side panel (adding your resume and choosing how to pay for the AI), your first tailoring, and the manual zip install for anyone who wants the newest build before a store review clears.

What you need before you start

Very little, honestly:

  • Google Chrome (or a Chromium browser that supports Chrome extensions).
  • Your base resume — the master version you'd normally send out. Scout tailors this per role; it never fabricates experience or removes sections.
  • A way to pay for the AI — either ₹399 for 50 managed credits, or your own Anthropic API key (free to create; you pay Anthropic per use, about ₹0.50 per tailoring at the recommended default). More on this choice below — you pick it during first-run setup, and you can switch later.

No subscription, no account creation before install, no credit card just to try the interface.

Install from the Chrome Web Store (recommended)

This is the path almost everyone should take. Four steps:

  1. Open the listing. Go to Scout by AgentCo on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm when Chrome asks. The Scout icon appears in your toolbar within a few seconds.
  3. Pin the icon (optional but useful). Click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar, find Scout, and click the pin. You'll be clicking it on every job page, so keep it visible.
  4. Open any job posting and click the Scout icon. The side panel opens and walks you through first-time setup.

That's the entire install. Because it's a Web Store install, Chrome handles updates automatically — you never re-download anything.

First open: add your resume, pick how you'll pay for the AI

The first time the side panel opens, Scout asks for two things.

1. Your base resume

Upload your resume once. It's stored in your browser's local storage — this is the version Scout rewrites per job. Use your strongest, most complete master resume here; tailoring reorders and rewords what's already there rather than inventing anything new.

2. Managed credits or your own API key

This is the one real decision in setup, and it's about cost versus convenience:

Managed creditsYour own Anthropic API key
Setup effortNone — pay ₹399, get 50 credits~5 minutes to create a key
Cost per tailoring~₹8 (₹399 ÷ 50)~₹0.07–₹4 depending on model; ~₹0.50 at the recommended default
Where your resume goesThrough AgentCo's server to Anthropic (not stored on our servers)Straight from your browser to Anthropic — AgentCo's servers never see it
Best forTrying it out, or anyone who doesn't want to touch an API consoleRegular use — 50 tailorings a month costs about ₹25

If you're not sure, start with managed credits and switch to a key later once you're tailoring regularly — the BYOK setup section of our troubleshooting guide covers creating an Anthropic key step by step, including what each model tier costs.

Your first tailoring, start to finish

  1. Open a job posting on LinkedIn, Naukri, iimjobs, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Indeed, or Workday. Scout auto-detects the job title, company, and full description from the page. On any other site, paste the job description into the panel manually — it works everywhere.
  2. Click the Scout icon in your toolbar. The side panel opens alongside the job page with the detected role filled in.
  3. Hit Tailor. Claude rewrites your resume to match the job description's language and priorities — moving your most relevant bullets up, mirroring the JD's terminology, and writing a cover letter for the role. This takes around 30 seconds.
  4. Download or copy. Take the tailored resume as a PDF, or copy the markdown into your own template. Same for the cover letter.

That's one role done. The workflow from here is simply: see a job you like → click Scout → tailor → apply. No copy-pasting between tabs, no separate tool open in another window. If you want the deeper reasoning on why per-role tailoring beats one generic resume, we've written that up in how to tailor your resume to every job using AI.

The zip fallback: installing a pre-review build manually

The Web Store is the right choice for nearly everyone. The one reason to install manually: new versions of the extension go through Chrome's review process before they appear on the store, and if you want a build the moment it ships — before review clears — the zip on agentco.in/extension is always the latest.

  1. Download the zip from the extension page and extract it to a folder you won't delete (Chrome loads the extension from this folder every time it starts).
  2. Open chrome://extensions in a new tab.
  3. Toggle on Developer Mode (top-right corner).
  4. Click Load unpacked and select the extracted folder. Scout appears in your toolbar.

Note the trade-off: manually loaded extensions don't auto-update — you'd repeat these steps for each new build. Unless you specifically want pre-review builds, use the Web Store.

Where the extension fits in Scout

The extension is the on-demand piece of Scout: you find the job, it tailors the resume. If you'd rather have the finding automated too, Scout Web's free preview searches 30+ boards and shows you a scored shortlist at no cost, and the Scout plugin runs the whole search–tailor–apply loop on your own machine. And if you're comparing the extension against paid SaaS tailoring tools like Teal or Jobscan first, our comparison of AI resume tailor extensions covers that.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Scout Chrome extension free?

Yes — installing from the Chrome Web Store costs nothing and there is no subscription. You pay only for the AI that does the tailoring: bring your own Anthropic API key and pay Anthropic directly (about ₹0.50 per tailoring at the recommended default — roughly ₹25 for 50), or buy 50 managed credits for ₹399 if you would rather skip key setup.

Do I need an Anthropic API key to use Scout?

No. Managed credits (₹399 for 50 tailorings) need no API key at all — pay once, tailor 50 times. The bring-your-own-key route exists because it is much cheaper per tailoring: you pay Anthropic at their API rates with no AgentCo markup, and your resume goes from your browser straight to Anthropic. Our troubleshooting and BYOK setup guide walks through getting a key.

Which job sites does the extension auto-detect?

Scout auto-detects the job title, company, and full description on LinkedIn, Naukri, iimjobs, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Indeed, and Workday job pages. On any other site, paste the job description into the side panel — the tailoring itself works identically everywhere.

How do I install the extension without the Chrome Web Store?

Download the zip from agentco.in/extension, extract it to a permanent folder, open chrome://extensions, switch on Developer Mode, click Load unpacked, and select the folder. This route is mainly for grabbing the newest build before a store review clears — for everyone else the one-click Web Store install is easier and keeps itself updated.
