The Scout extension is deliberately simple — open a job page, click the icon, get a tailored resume in about 30 seconds — but a browser extension lives inside pages it doesn't control, and AI billing has its own moving parts. This guide covers the handful of things that actually go wrong, plus the full bring-your-own-key (BYOK) setup: getting an Anthropic API key, picking a model, and what each tailoring really costs.

If you haven't installed the extension yet, start with the install guide — it's a one-click Chrome Web Store install.

Problem 1: Scout isn't detecting the job on the page

First, check whether the site is one Scout auto-detects. The extension reads the job title, company, and description automatically on LinkedIn, Naukri, iimjobs, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Indeed, and Workday job pages. On every other site, auto-detection isn't expected to fire — and that's fine, because manual paste works on 100% of job pages: copy the job description, paste it into the side panel, and tailoring proceeds identically.

If the page is on the supported list and detection still comes up empty, run through these in order:

  1. Make sure you're on an individual job posting, not a search-results or listings page. Scout reads one role at a time.
  2. Refresh the page, then open the side panel. Job boards like LinkedIn load content dynamically — if you navigated to the job from within the site rather than loading the URL fresh, the panel may have opened before the job content existed. A refresh with the panel closed, then a fresh click on the Scout icon, resolves most detection misses.
  3. Check for a logged-out or consent wall. Some boards show a truncated JD until you sign in or dismiss a cookie banner. Scout can only read what the page actually shows.
  4. Reload the extension. Go to chrome://extensions, find Scout, and click the reload arrow. If you installed manually from the zip, also check the extension page for a newer build — site layouts change, and detection fixes ship in updates. (Web Store installs update automatically.)

And when all else fails: paste the JD manually. You lose about ten seconds and nothing else — the tailored output is the same.

Problem 2: credits not showing after purchase

If you bought the ₹399 pack of 50 managed credits and the side panel doesn't reflect it:

  1. Close and reopen the side panel — the balance refreshes when the panel loads.
  2. Check you're using the same email you paid with. Credits attach to the account from the purchase; a typo'd or different email at checkout is the most common cause of a "missing" balance.
  3. Confirm the payment actually completed. Check for a payment confirmation from Razorpay (our payment provider) in your inbox. An abandoned or failed checkout doesn't create credits.
  4. Still nothing? Email hello@agentco.in with the email you paid with and the payment reference from the confirmation. Payments are logged server-side, so a genuine paid-but-not-credited case gets fixed quickly.

One thing that is not a bug: the extension has no monthly allowance that resets. Credits are a one-time pack — when you've used 50, you either buy another pack or switch to your own API key, which is the cheaper path for regular use.

BYOK setup: getting your Anthropic API key

Bring-your-own-key mode is why the extension can be free: you pay Anthropic directly, at their API rates, with no AgentCo markup — and your resume goes straight from your browser to Anthropic, never touching AgentCo's servers. Setup takes about five minutes:

  1. Create an Anthropic account at console.anthropic.com — signing up is free.
  2. Add a small credit balance. API usage is prepaid. ₹500 covers roughly 1,000 tailorings at the recommended default model — for most job seekers, that's several months of searching.
  3. Create an API key under Settings → API keys, and copy it (it's shown once).
  4. Paste it into Scout's settings in the side panel. The key is stored locally in Chrome — AgentCo never sees your key or your resume in this mode.

Model choice: what each tailoring costs

In your key settings you pick which Claude model does the tailoring, which is really a price-versus-polish dial:

OptionCost per tailoring50 per monthWhen to use it
Budget model~₹0.07~₹3.50High-volume applying where speed matters most
Recommended default~₹0.50~₹25The best quality-to-cost balance — start here
Maximum quality~₹4~₹200The handful of roles you care most about

A sensible pattern: leave the default on for everyday tailoring, and switch up to maximum quality for your top-priority applications. Even the expensive option is a fraction of what monthly-subscription tailoring SaaS costs — the extension comparison post breaks that down against Teal, Kickresume, Rezi, and Jobscan.

Common API key errors

  • "Invalid API key" or authentication errors — the key was pasted with a missing character or surrounding whitespace, or it was deleted in the Anthropic console. Re-copy it, or create a fresh key and paste that.
  • Errors about credit or billing — your Anthropic balance has run out. Top up at console.anthropic.com; this is between you and Anthropic, and AgentCo can't see or fix it. (This is the BYOK equivalent of running out of managed credits.)
  • Tailoring starts but never finishes — usually a network hiccup or a very long job description. Retry once; if it persists across different jobs, reload the extension and try again.

When to email hello@agentco.in

Self-service covers detection misses and key setup, but write to hello@agentco.in when:

  • You paid for credits that never appeared (include payment email + reference — see above).
  • A supported site consistently fails detection even after a refresh — include the job URL so detection can be fixed for everyone.
  • The side panel shows an error you can't interpret — include the exact message and what you were doing.
  • Anything billing-related on the managed-credits side. (Anthropic key billing issues go to Anthropic; managed-credit issues come to us.)

A one-line report with the URL and the error text gets a faster fix than "it doesn't work" — there's a real inbox on the other end, not a ticket bot.

Beyond the extension

If your real problem isn't tailoring but finding the roles worth tailoring for, the extension is only one piece of Scout. Scout Web's free preview searches 30+ boards and shows you a scored shortlist before you pay anything, and the full pricing picture — extension credits included — is on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't Scout detecting the job description on the page?

Auto-detection covers LinkedIn, Naukri, iimjobs, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Indeed, and Workday job pages. On any other site — or when a supported site changes its layout — paste the JD into the side panel manually; tailoring works identically. And try a page refresh before opening the panel: jobs opened via in-page navigation sometimes load after Scout has already read the page.

How do I get an Anthropic API key for Scout?

Create a free account at console.anthropic.com, open Settings → API keys, create a key, and add a small credit balance — ₹500 covers roughly 1,000 tailorings at the recommended default model. Paste the key into Scout's settings in the side panel. It's stored locally in Chrome; AgentCo never sees it.

How much does each resume tailoring cost?

With your own key, it depends on the model you pick in Scout's settings: about ₹0.07 per tailoring on the budget model, about ₹0.50 on the recommended default, and about ₹4 on the maximum-quality model — so 50 tailorings a month at the default is roughly ₹25. With managed credits it's ₹399 for 50, about ₹8 each. Full pricing across all of Scout is on the pricing page.

Where do I get help if nothing here works?

Email hello@agentco.in with what you were doing, the job page URL, and any error message from the side panel. For credits or payment issues, include the email you paid with and the payment reference so the team can find your purchase quickly.
